A Week of Chaos: Why Democratic Stability Matters More Than Ever
Listen, I’m gonna be straight with you. This week has been absolutely nuts, and I know you’re probably scrolling through your feeds feeling overwhelmed by the news. So let me break down what’s happening and why it actually matters to you, your job, and your wallet. Shit is wild folks…
The War Nobody Asked For
Ten days ago, the U.S. and Israel started a major military campaign against Iran. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in the strikes, and Iran has been firing hundreds of missiles and drones in response. Yesterday, Iran named a new supreme leader who military analysts say is even harder line than the guy before him.
Here’s what Trump said today: the war is “very complete.” His exact words? Iran has “nothing left” militarily.
Okay. But here’s the thing that actually affects you: oil prices just spiked to $110+ a barrel, which means your gas costs more. Flights are grounded across the Middle East. Shipping routes are getting rerouted. This isn’t abstract geopolitics—it’s hitting your grocery bill, your commute, maybe your job if you work in tourism or logistics.
And while Trump is declaring victory, he’s also… talking to Putin about how to end it all. Let that sink in. The leader of our biggest geopolitical rival is apparently now in the conversation about how we wind down military operations.
The Republican Majority is Literally Falling Apart
Here’s the other thing that happened today that barely anyone is talking about because the Iran situation is so wild: a Republican Congressman just left the Republican Party.
Rep. Kevin Kiley from California officially became an independent today. His district got gerrymandered to hell by Newsom, and instead of being a team player and fighting in a safer Republican district, he decided to actually push back against the whole rotten system. Fair enough.
But here’s why this matters: Speaker Mike Johnson’s majority is now razor thin. Like, scary thin. Republicans have 217 seats. Democrats have 214. With three vacancies, Johnson can literally only lose TWO votes on anything he wants to pass. Two.
You know what’s hard to pass with a two-vote margin? Everything. Healthcare fixes. Tax policy. Infrastructure. Literally anything.
And it gets worse. Kiley said he won’t commit to being a reliable vote for Johnson going forward. He’s an independent now. He’s going to vote his conscience.
This is What Republican Governance Looks Like
I need to say this clearly because I know a lot of people on the left are frustrated with Democrats right now: This is what happens when Republicans are in charge.
They waste time fighting each other instead of solving problems. They lose their majority because they can’t even keep their own party together. They fight culture wars instead of addressing cost of living. They start wars in the Middle East that spike gas prices at your local pump.
The longest government shutdown in U.S. history? Republican chaos under Trump. Massive healthcare costs rising? GOP inability to actually govern. A pointless redistricting war dividing the country? Both parties do it, but Republicans started the current cycle.
I get the frustration with Democratic infighting. Trust me, I live in Seattle—I see progressive purity tests every single day, and yeah, sometimes they’re counterproductive. But you know what’s worse? A party that literally can’t function.
The Real Question
Here’s what I keep coming back to: What do you want from your government?
Do you want drama and ideological purity games while people are struggling with rent, healthcare costs, and gas prices? Or do you want a party that, while imperfect and sometimes frustrating, can actually govern?
Right now, Republicans can’t pass a budget without an existential crisis. They can’t even keep their own members in their party. They’re starting wars that spike inflation, and then… they want YOU to blame Democrats for the economy.
This week has shown us both things: the real geopolitical instability of the world under Trump, and the real governmental chaos when Republicans are in power.
What You Can Do Right Now
Vote. Yeah, I know, it’s early. But 2026 is coming, and this moment—this exact moment where Republicans are imploding and Trump is on the phone with Putin about how to end conflicts—this is when voters decide what kind of country we want.
More Republicans in Congress means a smaller majority. More chaos. Less actual governance.
More Democrats means the ability to actually address the things that matter to your life: healthcare, infrastructure, protecting voting rights, actually tackling climate change instead of just talking about it.
I know it feels like everything is on fire. It is. But voting is how we make sure the people who have to put out the fires actually have the tools to do it.
Tomorrow is a new day, or a new nightmare however you look at it. I’ll stick with all of you and update you as the chaos happens.
Also, anyone need a coffee? Because I need a coffee.
Take care of each other.
Sean
