The Polls Are Sending a Message Democrats Can’t Ignore

Morning Cup – July 21, 2026

If there was any doubt that Democratic voters are demanding something different, yesterday’s Michigan Senate polling should put that to rest.

Progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed is now leading Rep. Haley Stevens in the Democratic primary. That’s not just another poll. It’s another data point in a trend that’s becoming impossible to ignore.

Across the country, establishment Democrats are running into a wall of frustration. Voters are exhausted by politicians who campaign on protecting democracy while responding to unprecedented attacks with press releases and carefully worded statements. People want leaders willing to fight—not just manage the status quo.

The energy behind candidates like El-Sayed isn’t about personality. It’s about priorities.

Voters are looking for candidates who are willing to challenge corporate influence, reject big-money politics, stand up for working people, and speak clearly about issues that many establishment politicians have tried to avoid. Whether it’s healthcare, housing, labor rights, or U.S. foreign policy, there’s a growing appetite for candidates who aren’t afraid to take positions that reflect the values of their base.

The political establishment has spent years telling progressives to wait their turn.

But voters don’t seem interested in waiting anymore.

The Michigan race is one of several contests that will help answer an important question: Is the Democratic Party going to continue relying on the same playbook, or is the grassroots finally taking the wheel?

Whatever happens on primary day, one thing is already clear.

The center of gravity inside the Democratic electorate is shifting.

And ignoring that shift hasn’t worked so far.

Question of the Day: Do you think Democratic voters are rejecting the establishment—or simply demanding that it finally start fighting?

Lots of my effort over the next few days will be making sure Michigan voters get out and make Abdul Michigan next senator.

See you all tomorrow!
