Good morning.
Happy weekend! I got out of bed this morning and already knew today was going to be filled with news, so lets get right into it! Make sure you have a cup of coffee handy, or 4...
It is Saturday, August 29, and somehow the United States woke up in a trade war with Canada, Donald Trump is escalating his attacks on the legitimacy of the midterm elections before anyone has even voted, ICE is spending millions on electric shock gloves, and Trump’s felony conviction is still very much alive.
So yeah.
TRUMP’S TRADE WAR WITH CANADA IS GETTING VERY REAL
The ridiculous part of this story is Donald Trump renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America.”
The serious part is everything happening around it.
Trump has imposed 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian imports after trade negotiations between the two countries collapsed. Canada has responded with dollar-for-dollar retaliation targeting American products.
And there is another problem for Trump: the legal authority he used is basically uncharted territory.
Trump invoked Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, a 96-year-old provision that has apparently never been used by a president and has never been tested in court.
Trade attorneys are now openly questioning whether the president actually has the authority to do what he just did.
Canada, meanwhile, isn't just throwing tariffs randomly at a spreadsheet.
Canadian officials say they deliberately selected products from particular U.S. states in an attempt to put political pressure on American officials as the trade fight escalates.
Trump can rename every puddle between Buffalo and Toronto if he wants.
American consumers are still the ones who could end up paying for this trade war.
TRUMP IS ALREADY BUILDING HIS MIDTERM ELECTION FRAUD NARRATIVE
We are still more than two months away from the midterm elections.
Donald Trump is already attacking the process.
Trump and his allies are increasingly pushing claims about noncitizens voting in American elections while advocating new restrictions on mail voting.
Among the proposals Trump is pushing: requiring the Postal Service to send mail ballots only to voters whose citizenship has been verified.
His administration has also promoted questionable claims about supposedly enormous numbers of noncitizens being registered or voting.
Election officials and experts have challenged the reliability of those numbers, while actual documented cases of noncitizen voting remain extremely rare.
This matters because we've watched this movie before.
You don't have to wait until Election Night to undermine an election.
You spend months convincing your supporters that the only legitimate outcome is the one where you win.
Then if the voters disagree, you've already built the excuse.
November is getting closer.
Pay attention.
ICE JUST APPROVED A $16.7 MILLION CONTRACT FOR ELECTRIC SHOCK GLOVES
Yes.
Electric. Shock. Gloves.
ICE has approved a $16.7 million contract for thousands of gloves capable of delivering an electrical shock, despite concerns from sixteen senators about how the equipment could be used.
The agency describes the technology as a potentially less-lethal tool intended to help agents control people during confrontations.
But critics are asking an extremely reasonable question:
Should an immigration enforcement agency already facing enormous scrutiny over its use of force really be handing agents wearable electrical weapons?
The purchase comes amid a massive expansion of immigration enforcement under the Trump administration and continuing scrutiny surrounding ICE encounters across the country.
This deserves significantly more attention than it's currently receiving.
TRUMP TRIED AGAIN TO ESCAPE HIS FELONY CONVICTION. A JUDGE SAID NO.
Donald Trump remains a convicted felon.
A federal judge rejected Trump's latest attempt to move his already-decided New York hush-money criminal case into federal court.
Trump's attorneys argued that presidential immunity should allow the case to be moved.
U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein disagreed, concluding that the conduct involved Trump's personal actions rather than official presidential duties.
Trump was convicted in 2024 on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to the Stormy Daniels hush-money payment.
He received an unconditional discharge before beginning his second term, meaning there was no prison sentence or fine.
But the conviction itself remains intact.
Trump continues appealing.
AND YES, THAT VENEZUELA OIL STORY IS AS WILD AS IT SOUNDS
One of yesterday's biggest stories deserves another look this morning because the implications are enormous.
Trump announced an agreement that would give the United States control over development involving an estimated 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil reserves.
Under the announced framework, a new private company would develop 17 Venezuelan oil fields, with the United States holding a 55% operational share.
The administration argues the arrangement could help replenish American petroleum reserves and eventually increase oil supplies as the war with Iran continues to disrupt global energy markets.
But actually extracting substantial new oil from Venezuela could take years, and major questions remain about infrastructure, investment, sovereignty and exactly how this extraordinary arrangement will operate.
So when someone tells you this is simply about lowering gas prices:
Keep asking questions.
Because 65 billion barrels of another country's oil is not a normal energy agreement.
THE SEATTLE DESK
The fight over Seattle's next police chief is already becoming political.
City Council Public Safety Chair Bob Kettle is pushing back against Mayor Katie Wilson's characterization of the search, emphasizing that whoever Wilson chooses will ultimately require City Council approval.
Wilson has said the next chief will help implement her administration's public-safety vision.
Kettle is making it clear that Council expects a significant role too.
This comes immediately after the attempted recall against Wilson collapsed before getting off the ground.
Translation:
Seattle politics apparently has absolutely no intention of taking Labor Day weekend off.
Neither do we.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The circus is loud.
The consequences are louder.
A president renaming Lake Ontario sounds absurd until you remember it is happening alongside an escalating trade war with America's closest neighbor.
Claims about election fraud sound like another Trump rant until they're being paired with actual attempts to change how Americans receive ballots.
And a government contract for electric shock gloves sounds dystopian until you realize the contract has already been approved.
That's why we keep paying attention.
Not because every headline deserves panic.
Because underneath the spectacle, consequential policy is still being made.
And somebody needs to actually read the damn fine print.
This is The Morning Cup for Saturday, August 29.
Stay informed. Stay loud. And I'll keep watching the news throughout the day.
