The Morning Cup ☕ | May 10, 2026
Let's get into it. Here's what's breaking this Sunday morning.
Republicans Win the Map, But Not the Mood
Back-to-back redistricting victories in court have Republicans feeling good about the 2026 midterm battlefield. The Virginia Supreme Court blocked a referendum that could have netted Democrats up to four House seats, and the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on race in redistricting has red states moving fast to redraw majority-Black districts. Analysts say Republicans could theoretically gain 13 seats from redistricting alone.
But the national mood is working against them. Trump’s approval is sliding into the 30s in some polls, and Democrats keep overperforming in special elections — most recently flipping a Michigan state Senate seat by 19 points in a district Harris only carried by 1. Cook Political Report still has Democrats favored to retake the House.
The map got better. The environment didn’t.
The DOJ Is Coming for Citizenship
The Department of Justice moved Friday to strip citizenship from 12 naturalized Americans, accusing them of lying during the naturalization process. Acting AG Todd Blanche made clear this is just the beginning — the administration is targeting 100 to 200 cases per month, with 384 already in the pipeline. Legal experts are raising serious due process concerns: in civil denaturalization proceedings, you don’t get a public defender, and the burden of proof is lower than in criminal court.
Blanche’s message to naturalized citizens? If you “shouldn’t be” here, you should be “worried.”
That’s not a legal standard. That’s a threat.
The Iran Ceasefire Is Holding — Barely
The US-Iran ceasefire remains in place, but the situation is anything but stable. The IRGC is warning Washington against any attacks on Iranian ships, and Israel killed 24 people in Lebanon overnight. The US struck two Iran-flagged oil tankers earlier this week that it says were skirting a blockade. Secretary Rubio says the US is still waiting on Iran’s response to a peace deal framework.
A ceasefire and a peace deal are very different things. One stops the shooting temporarily. The other requires both sides to actually want it.
We’re still very much in the first category.
