The Morning Cup - Tuesday, July 28th

1. Trump asks the Supreme Court to let new mail voting restrictions move forward

The Trump administration has asked the Supreme Court to allow enforcement of an executive order that would require states to create eligibility lists before voters can receive mail ballots. Voting rights advocates argue it could significantly reshape access to mail voting ahead of the midterms.

Why it matters: This has the potential to become one of the biggest election law stories of the year.

2. Midterm campaigns enter the final 100-day sprint

Both parties are entering the final stretch with very different messages. Democrats are leaning heavily into affordability and healthcare, while Republicans continue centering Trump and immigration. At the same time, reports suggest Republicans remain concerned about enthusiasm among some core voters.

Why it matters: Every major announcement from here on out is designed to move undecided voters.

3. ICE remains under growing scrutiny

Questions surrounding ICE oversight continue after recent use-of-force controversies, while the administration is also reviewing parts of its vetting process following the Maine shooting investigation. Immigration enforcement is likely to stay near the top of the national conversation this week.

Why it matters: Expect Democrats to continue making accountability a central issue.

4. Congress is still debating Trump’s priorities

Lawmakers continue battling over funding, voting legislation, and administration priorities as both chambers race toward the election. With Congress narrowly divided, almost every vote carries outsized political significance.

Why it matters: These fights will dominate campaign messaging over the next three months.

5. Seattle action to watch

If you’re looking to get involved locally, organizers are continuing voter outreach ahead of November. A voter registration postcard event is happening Thursday, and weekly demonstrations outside the DHS/ICE facility in Tukwila continue on Fridays.

Why it matters: Local organizing is ramping up as Washington heads into the final months before Election Day.

Final Sip

We’re officially in campaign season now. The pace is only going to accelerate from here. Every court ruling, every poll, every congressional vote, and every organizing effort has the potential to shape November.

If you want to stay ahead of the headlines instead of chasing them, you’re in the right place.

Have a great Tuesday, stay informed, and I’ll see you tomorrow for another Morning Cup.

Much love,

Sean
